San Franciscans may be familiar with the edgy local band Apes of God (best known for their Edge of Arrival CD), but they may not know that they've just co-released a new CD along with a film of the same title: How to Pick Up Girls. The film essentially plays upon the CD's lyrics, which are a clever recital of pick-up lines. The film version, which was written and directed by the band's lead vocalist, Gilbert Marhoefer, tracks the story of a young man who just can't meet women - until advice given to him by a bartender works just a little too well. Shot entirely in San Francisco, the film features locations familiar to many and demonstrates the originality of both the city and its residents.
How to Pick Up Girls will soon be showing at numerous film festivals, and the film is produced as an enhanced CD so that it can be viewed as a QuickTime movie from a CD rom drive. The accompanying CD from the Apes of God is available at Borders, Tower and Amoeba Music in San Francisco.
In addition, Marhoefer and photographer Eric Logan are exhibiting a number of film stills, photographs, and multimedia works from the project. How to Pick Up Girls, will be on display at the Sightings Gallery at 435 Bryant Street. For more information contact the gallery at 415.546.1132.
